There are seasons in the spiritual life when faith feels distant. Prayer becomes quiet. Words feel empty. What once brought comfort now feels like routine. Many people experience this and wonder if something is wrong with them or if they have failed in their faith. Often the opposite is true.
Silence does not always mean absence. In Scripture and in the lives of the saints, God often works most deeply when He feels least present. Faith is not always accompanied by strong emotions or clear answers. Sometimes it is simply the choice to remain, to show up, and to trust even when nothing seems to happen.
In these moments, prayer can feel more like waiting than speaking. Sitting before God without many words is still prayer. Attending Mass without feeling lifted is still an act of love. Continuing to turn toward God, even with questions or fatigue, is a sign of faith that is maturing.
Dryness also teaches us honesty. It strips away the idea that faith is meant to make life easy or emotionally rewarding at all times. Instead, it invites us to love God for who He is, not for what we feel. This kind of faith is quieter and less visible, but it is often deeper.
Many saints wrote about long periods of spiritual dryness. They did not escape it by trying harder or seeking constant reassurance. They stayed faithful in small ways. They kept praying, serving, and trusting that God was at work beyond what they could see or feel.
When faith feels dry, it is important not to isolate yourself. Sharing the journey with a trusted priest, spiritual director, or faithful friend can bring perspective and encouragement. The Church walks with us in every season, not only in times of clarity and joy.
Remaining faithful in silence is not weakness. It is a steady yes to God when everything feels still. Over time, often without warning, life returns to prayer. But even if it does not, faith lived in quiet trust is precious in the eyes of God.
Sometimes the most sincere prayer is simply this: Lord, I am here.
